We’re inviting singers across the Wairarapa to join Wellington’s Vocal Blokes for a day of music, laughter, and community at St Andrew’s Church, Greytown – Saturday 22 November.
Last year’s concert was such a joy that we’re doing it again – this time with two open singing workshops led by our new music director, Paddy Shanahan, before the 4:30 pm concert Over the Hill and Still Singing.
“I love seeing people realise they can sing,” says Paddy. “Singing isn’t about perfection – it’s about breathing together, listening, and having fun. Everyone’s welcome.”
Workshop 1 – Finding Your Voice (11:30 – 1:00 pm)
Think you “can’t sing”? Paddy will prove otherwise. Using Reviewing the Situation from Oliver! he’ll show how rhythm and expression turn ordinary speech into song – no solos, no pressure, just an easy, good-humoured warm-up for your voice.
Workshop 2 – Singing Together (2:00 – 3:30 pm)
Build harmony and connection as Paddy leads the group through Coldplay’s Fix You (Jacob Collier style). It’s about listening, blending, and creating something beautiful together.
Participants in both workshops can join the Vocal Blokes for this song in the concert – a real community-choir moment.
Workshops are $20 each or $35 for both, and if you enrol for both, you receive free concert entry.
“We’ve kept the cost low because we want as many singers as possible to come,” says John Faisandier, VBs Core Group Leader. “It’s a chance to share what we love about singing with the whole district.”
Concert – Over the Hill and Still Singing (4:30 pm)
Expect songs of travel, friendship, and connection, delivered with our trademark mix of heart and humour.
“Greytown audiences are special,” says Vocal Bloke Jules Maher, a previous Featherston resident and Te Wakaiti Community member. “They listen, laugh, and sing along – it always feels like we’re performing among friends.”
The Vocal Blokes range in age from 30s to 80s – proof that music keeps the spirit young. As John puts it, “We’re not all over the hill – but those who are still climb it with energy and a smile.”
Workshops at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm.
Concert at 4:30 pm – St Andrew’s Church, Greytown.
Bring your voice, bring a friend, and rediscover how good it feels to sing together.

“Come for the fun,” says Paddy, “stay for the harmony – and go home humming.”
