Purcell’s King Arthur – an operatic tale of love and magic that blends the richness of baroque music with a fresh, atmospheric vision.
First performed in 1619, Purcell’s semi-opera King Arthur: or The British Worthy remains a baroque masterpiece. Based on early Arthurian legends, it tells the story of young Arthur overcoming Saxon invaders to win the heart of Emmeline, a blind Cornish princess. With a new narration by playwright Michelanne Forster, this delightfully humorous interpretation is directed by Jacqueline Coats. Under the baton of well-known bass soloist, Simon Christie, let Emmeline, played by Carmel McGlone, guide you through a world of temptation and bitter frost that only love and magic can thaw.
The concert features Wellington Baroque Musicians and includes a cast of outstanding soloists – Rowena Simpson, Anna Sedcole, Helene Page, Elias Nguyen and Joe Haddow.
We have two performances at St Andrew’s on The Terrace – Saturday 9 May 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
