A popular programme of 18th century music including the well known Pergolesi Stabat Mater, a stunning concerto for trumpet and two oboes by Telemann and a short sacred piece by Mozart. The second half of the concert is devoted to solos and choruses from Handel’s much loved Messiah. The choir is joined by guest soloists and orchestra directed by John Jackets.
In this context, baroque refers to the period of music composed between around 1600 and 1750. Three of the concert works by Pergolesi, Telemann and Handel fall into this genre while the piece by the young 12 year old Mozart serves as an interesting transition from the Baroque to what was to become the Classical period of composition. Handel’s Messiah needs no introduction and here the choir and soloists will perform many of the best known solos and choruses
