6.50pm Pre-concert talk on “Hofmann in 18th-century Vienna” with 18th-century music expert Allan Badley
Join us for an enchanting concert in the stunning backdrop of Parnell’s Holy Trinity Cathedral, where voices of the past and present unite in harmonious celebration. The main feature of this concert is J. S. Bach’s Magnificat, BWV 243, a timeless masterpiece showcasing Bach’s mastery and creativity. This radiant work, written during his Leipzig tenure, has inspired and excited audiences for centuries. Four soloists contribute captivating arias, seamlessly weaving into Bach’s orchestral tapestry.
PLUS… this concert features Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque, an ethereal, unaccompanied piece designed to shimmer and glow in the cathedral’s acoustics. Ola Gjeilo’s Luminous Night of the Soul, written for choir, piano, and strings, takes listeners on a poetic, introspective voyage. Leopold Hofmann (1738–1793) was one of the most influential composers of his generation. His Mass in D, with its beguiling cello solo and brilliant trumpets, offers a rare glimpse into the rich musical traditions of Vienna’s St Stephen’s Cathedral in the 18th century. This performance marks the first known revival since Hofmann’s era, providing a unique opportunity to relish the opulence and grandeur of a bygone Viennese era.
