NZCF Insights Survey – what you told us

NZCF Insights Survey – what you told us

5 Mar 2026

#

We recently invited members and choral lovers around Aotearoa to share their thoughts in our Insights Survey, and we greatly appreciate the thoughtful feedback that came in. The responses offered a rich picture of what people value most about being part of NZCF, as well as areas where members see opportunities for future development.

Why Members Belong to NZCF

Compelling Reasons To Belong To Nzcf

One message came through very clearly: people value being part of a like‑minded community committed to the art of choral singing. Staying connected - both within local regions and across Aotearoa - matters a great deal. Members also appreciate opportunities to upskill, discover resources, and access practical administrative tools.

A few additional motivations also appeared, including:

  • a desire to volunteer and contribute to regional NZCF activities
  • supporting youth development for emerging conductors and singers
  • advocacy for singing as a vital part of life in New Zealand

Many respondents also highlighted the social and wellbeing benefits they experience through NZCF events - reinforcing the power of choral singing as both an artistic and a community‑building activity.

What people value most

Seven clear themes emerged from the survey responses:

Community & Belonging

Respondents repeatedly spoke about feeling part of a national and local choral whānau. Words like community, belonging, connection, and likeminded people appeared again and again.

National Coordination & Advocacy

NZCF is widely regarded as the national voice for choral singing - representing, promoting, organising, and advocating for the sector. Many see it as a “one‑stop shop” for choral matters and value its role in sustaining high standards and keeping traditions alive.

Information Flow & Communications

Communications such as eBreve, Regional Roundups, and regular news updates help members stay informed and connected. These channels are appreciated not just for sharing opportunities, but also for helping choirs feel part of something bigger.

Events, Workshops & Professional Development

National and regional events- including Sing Aotearoa, Choral Connect, SingFest, and many local workshops - were highlighted as major benefits. Members described them as sources of inspiration, expertise, and significant professional learning for both conductors and singers.

Youth & Schools Platforms

Programmes like The Big Sing and The Kids Sing were praised for offering young singers and teachers high‑quality performance opportunities and for nurturing a love of music within school communities.

Administrative Support

Choirs value the practical assistance NZCF provides, such as APRA licensing, insurance, and other administrative tools that make day‑to‑day operation much easier.

Quality, Standards & Access to Expertise

Members commented on NZCF’s commitment to excellence - referencing international connections, access to skilled practitioners, and the professional standards upheld across the organisation’s work.

Looking Ahead

We’re grateful not only for the positive feedback but also for the constructive suggestions on where services could be improved. These ideas will inform our planning as we continue to shape our future programmes and support structures. We also appreciate the offers of help in a range of ways. To those who offered assistance - we will be in touch!

A Final Thought

One comment captured the spirit of the survey beautifully:

“Big picture: Having a national body to represent, speak, advocate and promote this crucial artform. Personally – the access to resources, news, and workshops has been very valuable to me. The organisation of events such as Big Sing, Kids Sing, SingFest, Choir Games and regional workshops – where else would this happen?”
