Almost 600 children from the Wellington and Waikato regions took part in The Kids Sing this week, with festivals held at St Mark’s School in Wellington on November 1st and at Southwell School in Hamilton on November 3rd.
The Kids Sing is a choral festival for primary and intermediate school choirs, aimed at developing performance skills, encouraging enjoyment in group singing, and offering the option of constructive feedback from an NZCF commentator or adjudicator.
Six Wellington choirs took part in their local Kids Sing, featuring around 185 children from St Mark’s School, Samuel Marsden Collegiate, Kelburn Normal School, and Scot’s College. Brent Stewart was the adjudicator for the day, and Michaela Cadwgan compèred the event, which was organised by Anya Nazaruk.
Two days later up, the road in Hamilton, around 380 children from Fairfield Intermediate, Te Kowhai School, Pukete School, Te Awamutu Intermediate, Hilltop School, Greenpark School, Southwell School, Marian Catholic School, Firth Primary School, St Pius X Catholic School, and the Tron Songsters Children’s Choir each performed three songs, adjudicated by Jayne Tankersley. The event was organised by Julia McIntyre, Maria Colvin, Lynn Jamieson, and Brooke Baker.
We love seeing so many children enjoying group singing in these supportive environments, and hope that the fun and satisfaction of these performances inspire them to continue their singing journeys into high school and beyond. Huge congratulations to all involved! These events wouldn’t be possible without the support of choir directors, teachers, parents, family, supporters – and last but by no means least, all the amazing volunteers who make our Kids Sing festivals happen!
