With just over two weeks to go until Choral Connect, we’ve pulled all the latest information together for a one-stop overview…

THEME: The Choral Traditions of Aotearoa New Zealand

ARTISTIC TEAM: Dr Karen Grylls (Artistic Director), Robert Wiremu (Artistic Advisor), Jono Palmer (Artistic Programme Coordinator)

PRESENTERS
To address our conference theme, we feature presentations and workshops from some of New Zealand’s leading experts in Māori and Pasifika music: Dr. Charles Te Ahukaramū Royal, Ataahua Papa, Opeloge Ah Sam and Horomona Horo, plus Robert Wiremu‘s session on language and diction will include how to approach te reo Māori and other Pasifika languages. We’ll also connect via  Zoom with three international choral specialists: Indian-born, US-based conductor, ethnomusicologist, and human rights activist André de Quadros, the BBC Singers’ Swedish-born director Sofi Jeannin, and award-winning Venezuelan/US composer and choral conductor Cristian Grases. Swedish-national/NZ-resident vocal coach Catrin Johnsson will present on the topic of Creativity, and former Canada-based Kiwi Elise Bradley will unlock the Conductor’s Toolbox…

PERFORMERS
At the end of each day, delegates will enjoy a public concert featuring some of the country’s finest talent. Our Thursday and Friday evening concerts feature eight local ensembles invited to showcase Auckland’s choral community, while the final gala concert on Saturday evening showcases top Māori performance artists and two of New Zealand’s national choirs.

MASTERCLASS
Five delegates have been chosen to participate in a masterclass with Dr Karen Grylls and our choir-in-residence, the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir. Each participant will be given 15 minutes to work with the choir on aspects of gesture and rehearsal technique.

 

COMPOSITION WORKSHOP
Artistic director Karen Grylls and guest composer David Hamilton will work with Auckland-based members of Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir to workshop five compositions by student and emerging composers, two of which will be performed at the Saturday night gala concert.

 

REPERTOIRE READINGS & ONE-TO-ONE SESSIONS
Repertoire-reading sessions will be led by David SquireElise Bradley, Jono Palmer and Megan Flint and a number of ACD committee members and presenters will be available for one-to-one sessions with delegates.
