The sounds and stories of "Tinā"

Join us in Christchurch, the setting for the hit film Tinā, for a unique opportunity to explore and sing the music that has captivated audiences across Aotearoa.

Over the past two years, our Sing the Music of Tinā workshops have attracted nearly 300 participants, and have earned outstanding feedback from singers around the country. Two different workshops have been on offer: one exploring the vibrant Pasifika music of the film, led by Tinā Choir Master and Music Arranger Tuilagi Dr Igelese Ete, and the other led by David Squire, the off-camera choral director for the film’s ‘Assisi Singers’.

Tin ā At Piano

Now, for the first time, Tuilagi Dr Igelese Ete and David Squire will come together to lead a single workshop, offering participants a rare opportunity to explore the music of Tinā from both the Pasifika and Western choral perspectives. Alongside the chance to sing some of the film's most memorable music, participants will hear first-hand insights and behind-the-scenes stories from two of the key creative figures who helped bring the soundtrack to life.

The workshop will take place in Christchurch's historic Arts Centre, used as the setting for the 'posh' private school in the film. It's a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the music of Tinā in the very city where much of its story was brought to life.

Igelese
With Tuilagi Dr. Igelese Ete you will explore the vocalisation, melodies, meanings and cultural significance of the Samoan songs in the film. Feedback from previous workshops includes:

  • - Dr Igelese is a wonderfully engaging teacher. Loved the music.
  • - I loved the relaxed and informal setting with Dr Igelese Ete's warm and encouraging teaching style.  Not only was the workshop informative from a cultural perspective, it was also inclusive and musically rewarding.
  •

David Squire CroppedWith David Squire you’ll have an opportunity to sing some of the other repertoire featured in the film, with the off-screen conductor for the movie!
