Kiwi choirs excel at World Choir Games

Kiwi choirs excel at World Choir Games

That's a wrap on the World Choir Games 2024! We're taking a moment to celebrate our choirs from Aotearoa New Zealand who shared their music on this world stage.

Our choirs performed with warmth, generosity and an excellent standard of artistry, and we couldn't be prouder of them for proving to our country — and to the world — what so many of us already know: that Aotearoa is a nation full of song.

A total of around 250 choirs made their way to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland from around the world to take part in the Games from 10-20 July. Amongst them were almost 50 choirs from Aotearoa New Zealand who competed across the Open and Champions Competitions, taking away a total of 39 diplomas and 13 medals. New Zealand made it to third place in the total medal rankings, behind only China and the USA, who made for some pretty formidable competition!

In the Champions Competition, Vocal FX (pictured at the top of this article) was victorious in the Pop Choirs category. Three choirs from Aotearoa were Category Winners in the Open Competition: Sitting Room Singers in the Mixed Chamber Choirs category, United Auckland Gospel Choir in the Gospel category, and Nota Bene in Vocal Ensembles. We'd also like to give a shout-out to He Tangata Voices, the top scorer in the Pop with Choreography category of the Open Competition. Five of our choirs won a total of seven gold medals in the Champions Competition, and in the Open Competition, twelve received golden diplomas.

Below, you'll find the full list of Aotearoa choirs and their awards from the Games. We'll be reflecting on the World Choir Games 2024 over the weeks to come, highlighting the many facets of the Games that took place alongside this competitive element. But for now, we're thrilled to congratulate our medal, diploma and category winners. We commend them not only for these awards, but for their many hours of hard work, and their passion for collective music-making that shone through in their performances at the Games.
