Meet the Artistic Directors for Sing Aotearoa '23...

 Igelese   Ete  4x5Dr Igelese Ete is Associate Professor and Associate Dean: Pacific at Massey University’s College of Creative Arts in Wellington. Igelese’s formative choral experiences include singing in his church choir from an early age and performing with the New Zealand Youth Choir from 1986-1992. Following a BMus in Performance and a Master’s in Composition, Igelese was the first Creative Fellow of Pacific Music at Auckland University’s School of Creative and Performing Arts. In 2009, Igelese was awarded the prestigious Creative New Zealand Senior Pacific Artist Award for his contribution to the promotion and performance of Pacific music in New Zealand and the Pacific, and from 2011-2020 he was Head of Performing Arts at the Oceania Centre for Arts Culture and Pacific Studies, University of the South Pacific, in Fiji. With extensive conducting, composition, and teaching experience, Igelese was the NZ Choirmaster for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, working with composer Howard Shore and director Sir Peter Jackson. In 2016 he was contracted as choirmaster & music/choral consultant for Disney’s Moana featuring his Pasifika Voices choir from the University of the South Pacific. 


Jono   Palmer  4x5Jono Palmer is a dynamic and enterprising conductor from Auckland. His choirs have won national and international acclaim, including two Gold Medals at the 2015 Grand Prix of Nations in Magdeburg, Germany, and many awards at regional and national festivals of The Big Sing. As a conductor, Jono has been selected for masterclasses at the 2017 World Symposium of Choral Music and the 2017 National Collegiate Choral Organization National Conference. In October 2018, he was a finalist in the inaugural London International Choral Conducting Competition. In 2022, Jono took up the position of musical director for the Auckland Chamber Choir based at the University of Auckland, where he also lectures in conducting and music theory. Jono earned a MM in Choral Conducting from Indiana University, a BMus(hons) in Performance Voice, and a BA in Ancient History from the University of Auckland. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Choral Conducting at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Jono recently co-presented a paper with Elise Bradley titled The Voices of Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (Oceania) at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Istanbul in April 2023.
