Gregorian chant: From notation to performance

Square notes aren't for squares!  Join in this exploration of the intricacies, inconsistencies, and undoubted beauties of Gregorian Chant, a living Western musical tradition whose uninterrupted lineage dates from the Carolingian Empire in the 8th century CE to the present day.  In this workshop we will do a little unravelling of 1200-odd years of refinement to find authentic expression in this unique art form that has suffused Western classical music from Medieval times, through the Renaissance, to the realms of film and musical theatre.

By investigating a selection of pieces of chant we will:

  • examine some of the most common notations used
  • investigate different chant genres
  • explore Pythagorean tuning & organum
  • learn about chant rhythm & tempo

This workshop will be of great value and interest to anyone who has in interest in the history of Western music, ancient sound-worlds, or just wants to learn to tell their semiology from seismology.
