A big shout-out to all the choirs who entered the Ministry of Youth Development’s ‘Spirit of the Festival’ Youth Ambassadors Award this year. As always, our regional committees anguished over who should win awards with so many impressive submissions received.
This is the third consecutive year The Big Sing has enjoyed MYD’s support through this award, which recognises leadership, community participation, collaboration and innovation. MYD recognises that The Big Sing – and choral singing in schools generally – builds on young people’s strengths and contributes to further developing their leadership, teamwork and communication skills.
Senior advisor Shiblee Sazzad is so committed to The Big Sing that he attended two gala concerts this year, in Auckland and Wellington, and brought his young family along in Wellington. He commented afterwards: “It’s such a powerful event for our youth and it is fabulous to see students and teachers so passionate, working so many hours and sounding so heavenly!’
Winners this year were:
Sanctus – Sancta Maria College, Auckland
Soul Sisters – Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Hamilton
Christo Duce – Francis Douglas College, New Plymouth
Sacred Heart Gospel Choir – Sacred Heart College, Napier
