We’re very sad to announce that The Big Sing will not take place in 2020.
There is no guarantee at all that the restrictions on gatherings of more than 100 people will be lifted by the end of May in time for the start of our Regional TBS festivals. Besides, we’re very aware that many schools are restricting choir rehearsals and other extra-curricular activities, and there is the further possibility that schools will close altogether for a time. Therefore, we believe our only option is to cancel now and to give everyone the certainty they need in these ever-changing, uncertain times.
With no Regionals, there can be no Cadenzas and no Finale. So The Big Sing, as we know it, is completely cancelled for 2020. But please read on below for some creative alternatives we have in mind.
We will issue full refunds to all schools that have already paid their registration fee. Our National TBS Coordinator, Emma Billings, will be in touch with the schools to arrange reimbursement.
However, we are committed to finding ways to celebrate the work schools have put in so far, and to facilitate means by which choir directors can continue to work with their choirs remotely if they are not able to rehearse in person.
Non-competitive performances on a dedicated YouTube channel
Some TBS choirs may have a piece that they have been rehearsing since the start of the year and that they feel they would like to share online. We’re keen to set up a dedicated YouTube channel so that we can share their performance with other choirs – and perhaps even hold Facebook ‘watch parties’.
A virtual choir project
We intend to put resources into a virtual choir project that can bring together individual singers from choirs around the country – particularly if schools are closed and students are missing the well-being benefits of singing with one another. Eric Whitacre has done this to stunning effect, and now virtual choirs are popping up all over the world. We’d love to unite our TBS singers in a really positive project of this nature.
Here is a beautiful virtual choir performance of Eric Whitacre’s Fly to Paradise We hope we can create something uplifting for all our TBS singers to be a part of. Click on the image below to view the video.
