Auckland composer, Chris Artley, has won three international choral composition competitions in the space of six months! In July 2017, he won the Freudig Singers of Western New York Composition Competition, with an SATB and organ setting of Christina Rossetti’s poem, ‘Love Came Down at Christmas’. In November, he won first prize in the inaugural Leeds Philharmonic Christmas Carol Competition, with an SATB setting of Henry Longfellow’s poem, ‘Christmas Bells’. Last but not least, in December, he won the St Mary-at-Hill Carol Competition, with an SATB setting of Juliet Hill’s, ‘The Promised Child’. This now makes a grand total of ten first prizes in international competitions!
In January, Chris will be Composer-in-Residence for the RSCM Australasian Summer School in Auckland. In addition to giving a talk on ‘Composing for Choirs’, he has composed a new hymn for the occasion entitled, ‘Fill Now The Southern Skies With Praise’ (words by Neil Shroff). The summer school choirs will also be performing some of his pieces, including I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes and In Darkness and in Light, conducted by Andrew Lumsden, Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral. On Saturday 10 March 2018, the premiere of Chris’ Missa Brevis for Choir, Orchestra and Organ takes place at Holy Trinity Cathedral Parnell.
