Recently NZCF stawart Judy Tallon was the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award, presented for her excellent contribution to NZCF in the BOP/Waikato region.
Judy has been very active in the local choral music scene since moving to Tauranga in the early 1970s when she contributed as a chorister to the Cantabile Singers directed by Beatrice Webster. Because of her keen interest in choral music, especially when it involves the young people in our community, Judy formed and directed the Tauranga Junior Civic Choir in the mid-1990s. She has taught singing to many of Tauranga’s children and young people and has been a driving force behind the NZCF Regional Big Sing Waikato/BOP since it has been held in Tauranga.
Through her contribution to The Big Sing, Judy has been committed to encouraging our high school students to give of their best. She has been responsible for ensuring that awards are prepared for presentation to choirs that excel in a variety of aspects of performance on the day and when necessary also contributes to some of these awards out of her own pocket.
Judy has taken the trouble to know all the music teachers from local schools by name and goes out of her way to encourage them in their work with the students. She attends most of The Big Sing Finales, regardless of where they are held in the country and because she is fully aware of the standard of performance required to gain a place in this prestigious event, she supports students to aim for and reach it.
Judy is one the most positive people I know. She is very disciplined and expects the best from people in the nicest possible way. She never puts anyone down.
Judy has had to step back from the coal face in the last two years due to health issues. However, this has not dampened her enthusiasm for what the NZCF is doing for choral singing in NZ and Judy continues to be interested and supportive.
