Wellington’s much-loved May Workshop has been a cornerstone event in the Wellington choral scene for the past 34 years. The 2022 edition features Carl Orff’s iconic Carmina Burana as the work of choice to be rehearsed and performed over the course of an evening and a day – Friday 7th and Saturday 8th October – under the direction of Brent Stewart.
As the name suggests, the workshop traditionally runs in early May each year, having done so since the second iteration in 1989. However, with COVID-19 interrupting most choral events in the early part of 2022, the decision was made to move the workshop to a weekend in October, rather than cancel it outright.
Carmina Burana is one of the most regularly performed masterpieces of the 20th century, becoming known the world over for its fatalistic opening O Fortuna. Conductor Brent Stewart describes O Fortuna as “horribly discordant, but fantastic” and suggests those who haven’t performed the full work before will soon find the rest of the cantata “just as thrilling and provocative”.
Wellington is bustling with events through October (including the World of Wearable Arts) which can make accommodation tricky. Luckily that will not be an issue for May Workshoppers, with rooms specially set aside at Brentwood Hotel for attendees, at a rate of $149.50 per night (rate for up to two people). To take advantage of this arrangement, call the Brentwood Hotel (04 920 0400), and quote the group booking number 83154. Proof of workshop registration may be required upon check in.
