Based in Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand, Opera North was founded in 1996 by acclaimed opera singer and musical director Joan Kennaway QSM and her equally well known and esteemed husband Richard Kennaway QSM. Their accompanists, Clare Henderson and Lachie Mclean are an intrinsic part of the team and together lead a group of around 45 singers.
Established as a voluntary organisation, Opera North is dedicated to providing the opportunity for its members and the community to enjoy the beauty of singing. The scope of these singing activities spans across classical opera and through to popular musical theatre.
Structured as a Charitable Entity, Opera North is managed by a committee which is responsible for the financial and organisational management of the organisation. Within its objectives it seeks sponsorship to defray costs, enable ticket prices to be kept to a minimum and meet its commitment to donate any surplus funds to local charity.
