This innovative concert comprises several attractive works for unaccompanied choir that also feature a single solo ‘obbligato’ instrument or voice.

The highlight is a stunning choral arrangement of Vaughan Williams’ pastoral masterpiece The Lark Ascending, featuring Yanghe Yu on the original violin solo. Morricone’s famous ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ (from The Mission) uses both oboe and cello, and two moving works by noted NZ composer David Hamilton pair the choir with trumpet and erhu (a Chinese vertical fiddle) respectively. Framing the concert are two lively pieces by JS Bach that unite almost all the forces.

‘Obbligato’ also marks Viva Voce’s first concert in the fine acoustics and surroundings of the historic but newly-renovated St David’s Church in Khyber Pass. Now known as Kāhui St David’s, it is a new centre for the performing arts in uptown Auckland!

There’s onsite parking and many more spaces – some free on Sundays – available in the surrounding streets.
