Orpheus Choir: The Armed Man - A Mass For Peace

  • Date: 20/04/2024 19:30 - 21:15
  • Location: Michael Fowler Centre, Wakefield Street, Wellington
  • Tickets: $20-$60

The concert showcases Karl Jenkins’ stunning The Armed Man, and the world premiere of a new commission from New Zealand composer Takerei Komene, E Kiwi E. We present the concert at this time of global strife in the run-up to ANZAC Day and in honour of all victims of war and of all who have served their country.

The Armed Man premiered at the Royal Albert Hall (London) in 2000, and incorporates the words of Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Hiroshima bombing survivor, Sankichi Toge, in addition to excerpts from religious texts.

Takerei Komene’s new work, E Kiwi E, performed in te reo Māori, features kapa haka and a children’s choir, and honours NZ’s 28th Battalion, “the Māori Battalion”. We are thrilled to have commissioned this work, and its new telling of a unique New Zealand story, and look forward to welcoming you to this world premiere presentation.

Directed by Brent Stewart, these works will be performed at the Michael Fowler Centre at 7.30 pm on Saturday 20 April, 2024, when we will be joined by incredible alto soloist Maaike Christie-Beekman and the award-winning Wellington Brass Band.
