Catch up on Choral Connect '21: Cristian Grases

A year on from our highly successful Choral Connect conference in Auckland, we’re delighted to release a series of videos recorded at each of the sessions.

Choral Connect is the Association of Choral Director’s biennial conference providing professional development and networking for choral musicians of all backgrounds and experience. The 2021 conference theme was The Choral Traditions of Aotearoa New Zealand, and many of the presentations explored and celebrated the musical traditions of our Māori and Pasifika communities.

This month’s video release features Venezuelan-born Cristian Grases, Associate Professor of Choral Music at University of Southern California and conductor of the USC Thornton Concert Choir. Christian served as Vice-President for Latin America of the International Federation for Choral Music until December 2021 and is on the artistic committee for the World Youth Choir.

As well as being a sought-after conductor, clinician, academic, and adjudicator, Cristian is an award-winning composer whose works have been commissioned and sung by numerous prestigious ensembles around the world. In this Choral Connect ’21 presentation titled Hand in Hand, Christian wears his conductor and composer hats simultaneously and uses some of his compositions to explore how composing and conducting simply go ‘hand in hand’.
