Plans are shaping up for three Cadenza festivals around the country this August. Cadenza is the ‘next best thing to The Big Sing Finale’ enabling 36 competing choirs from across New Zealand to experience the buzz of a Finale-style event, with the added dimension of massed workshops with an international choral conductor who will also perform the role of adjudicator. These two-day events will culminate in a public gala concert allowing all the choirs to showcase an item from their Cadenza repertoire and to sing together music rehearsed with our international guest.
The Cadenza festivals will take place in three centres – one in the South Island, one in the lower North Island and one in the Upper North Island – with 12 choirs attending each. Choirs attending Cadenza will be the next 12 choirs from their region ranked immediately below those selected for Finale, and will be limited to one choir per school.
We envisage that the host city for Cadenza will rotate, in subsequent years, among the major centres in each area. For 2019, the Cadenza centres and dates are as follows:
South Island: Timaru, 16-17 August
Lower North Island: Whanganui, 19-20 August
Upper North Island: Rotorua, 25-26 August
Each competing choir will be asked to present two recitals, each comprising two items of up to 8 minutes’ total performance time. The four items will comprise at least one piece from each of the three TBS categories.
Further details of venues, times and adjudicators will follow. If you would like to get involved as a volunteer for your local Cadenza festival, please get in touch with the National Cadenza Coordinator, John Buchanan: firstname.lastname@example.org
