From the adjudicator, Chris Artley:

It has been a pleasure to adjudicate the NZCF/SOUNZ Composition Competition for 2017. I was most impressed by the very high standard of entries, which covered a wide range of musical styles. These included pieces inspired by Bulgarian dance rhythms and Middle Eastern scales, to atmospheric settings of poetry by Shakespeare and Dylan Thomas. There were also some very effective settings of Maori text. It was heartening to see that the composers have clearly been involved in choral singing and had a good understanding of what works for the voice. I do hope that you get a chance to hear your pieces performed by a choir.

Well done to everyone and do keep composing!
