ANNUAL APRA LICENCE
The NZCF has a special arrangement with APRA that gives member choirs an annual licence for the public performance of copyright music. Your APRA fee is included in your membership subscription and no further charges are made by APRA unless the work is a "grand right" composition and major choral works in excess of 20 minutes' duration. In these cases, a licence must be obtained from the relevant publisher directly.
Note that non-NZCF choirs are obliged to pay an annual APRA licence fee of $91 and, in addition, must still remit 1.6% of box-office income where copyright material is performed, so the NZCF APRA licence offers a significant benefit.
This requirement does not apply to an NZCF member choir because of the performance licence already described ie no further payments are due (apart from the exlcusions mentioned above).
What you need to after each performance APRA requires a copy of the programme or a list of songs performed by choirs. This is to ensure that the licence fee is distributed to composers of songs that are performed. The information can be posted to PO Box 6315, Wellesley Street, Auckland 1141 or emailed to licencenz@apra.com.au.
Should you have any queries regarding the any of the above, please visit www.apra.co.nz or email Greer Davies at APRA at gdavies@apra.com.au.

CADENCE
Organised by the National Library of New Zealand, is a searchable database of choral and orchestral music available for hire. NZCF members receive a 20% discount on music hired from the National Library's extensive collection.
Member choirs are encouraged to list their choir's music library in Cadence. This provides a greater range of music from which other choirs can draw, as well as generating revenue for the choirs which hire out their scores.
Cadence can be visited here.
RECORDING A CD? A Manufacture Licence can be obtained through APRA. It is only required for works that remain in copyright and there is a licence fee payable of 5.6% of the retail price of the CD.

COPYRIGHT
There is much confusion amongst member choirs about the issue of copyright so we thought that a re-statement of the rules might help. NZCF member choirs pay the licence fee as part of their annual membership subscription. The NZCF passes that on to APRA. Unless member choirs let APRA know what they have performed, APRA does not know which composers are entitled to a share of the royalty payment made each year.
Copyright is the means by which creators such as composers, songwriters and publishers make a living from their work. The law gives copyright owners a number of exclusive rights to control how and when their work is used. Choirs must understand and respect this. Two important rights that composers and publishers control are the rights to publicly perform and to reproduce or copy their work.
